The high temperature corrosion behavior of two 9Cr and 12Cr ferritic-martensitic steel grades was studied under CO$$_{2}$$ pressure varying from 1 to 250 bar for exposure times up to 8000 h. No breakaway oxidation was observed. 9Cr steel grades suffered from fast parabolic uniform oxidation and fast carburisation. Increasing CO$$_{2}$$ pressure had very little effect on the oxidation rate but increased the carburisation rate. The corrosion behavior of both 12Cr steel grades differed and might be influenced by gas composition, minor elements or surface finish. A corrosion mechanism coupling oxidation and carburisation is proposed.

Reducing coking coal consumption and CO$$_{2}$$ emissions by application of iACRES (ironmaking system based on active carbon recycling energy system) was investigated using process flow modeling to show effectiveness of HTGRs (high temperature gas-cooled reactors) adoption to iACRES. Two systems were evaluated: a SOEC (solid oxide electrolysis cell) system using CO$$_{2}$$ electrolysis and a RWGS (reverse water-gas shift reaction) system using RWGS reaction with H$$_{2}$$ produced by IS (iodine-sulfur) process. Both the effects on saving of the coking coal and reduction of CO$$_{2}$$ emissions were greater in the RWGS system. It was the reason of the result that excess H$$_{2}$$ which was not consumed in the RWGS reaction was used as reducing agent in the BF as well as CO. Heat balance in the HTGR, SOEC and RWGS modules were evaluated to clarify process components to be improved. Optimization of the SOEC temperature was desired to reduce Joule heat input for high efficiency operation of the SOEC system. Higher H$$_{2}$$ production thermal efficiency in the IS process for the RWGS system is effective for more efficient HTGR heat utilization. The SOEC system was able to utilize HTGR heat to reduce CO$$_{2}$$ emissions more efficiently by comparing CO$$_{2}$$ emissions reduction per unit heat of HTGR.

Incorporation of CO$$_{2}$$ exchange processes into a multilayer atmosphere-soil-vegetation model

Nagai, Haruyasu

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 44(10), p.1574 - 1592, 2005/10

This paper describes the incorporation of CO$$_{2}$$ exchange processes into an atmosphere-soil-vegetation model SOLVEG and examination of its sensitivity and impact of its stomatal resistance calculation on the latent heat flux over a winter wheat field. The model framework for the heat and water exchanges between the atmosphere and ground surface was validated in the previous papers (Nagai 2002, 2003). In this study, CO$$_{2}$$ exchange processes are incorporated in the model and the performance is examined. In the test calculation, the model simulated the CO$$_{2}$$ flux at 2 m above the ground well as a whole. A sensitivity test to clarify uncertainties for the model settings and parameters showed that the CO$$_{2}$$ production in the soil is the most important factor for the CO$$_{2}$$ calculation. Also, the impact of the CO$$_{2}$$ processes on the latent heat flux is discussed. The results indicate that the new model is effective and preferable to study surface exchanges of heat and water as well as CO$$_{2}$$.

Electron density of post-disruption runaway plasmas in JT-60U has been measured by the tangential CO$$_{2}$$ laser interferometer. Increases in electron density after the first drop of runaway plasma current have been observed during a fast termination phase of the runaway plasma. At the second current drop, an increase in electron density with multiple spikes or oscillation with the period of 1 ms has been found. It is suggested that the increased electron density seems to take part in the shorter current decay time after the second current drop.

To construct the ITER with high safety and acceptability, it is necessary to establish and to ensure the tritium safe handling technology. The performance of the detritiation system at the off-normal events has not been confirmed well. To obtain performance data of detritiation system at the off normal events, the detritiation experiment was performed at TPL/JAERI using a scaled detritiation system for the oxidation performance test. The detritiation system consists of two oxidation catalyst beds (473K and 773K) and a molecular sieve drying absorber. Basic performance of the detritiation system for hydrogen and methane in air was evaluated under maximum ventilation flow rate. Obtained oxidation efficiency was more than 99.99% for hydrogen in the catalyst bed of 473K and more than 99.9% for methane in the 773K one, respectively. It was confirmed that these performances were maintained even under carbon dioxide , carbon monoxide if oxygen remained in the process gas.

Atmosphere-soil-vegetation model including CO$$_{2}$$ exchange processes; SOLVEG2

Nagai, Haruyasu

JAERI-Data/Code 2004-014, 92 Pages, 2004/11

JAERI-Data-Code-2004-014.pdf:11.03MB

A new atmosphere-soil-vegetation model named SOLVEG2 (SOLVEG version 2) was developed to study the heat, water, and CO$$_{2}$$ exchanges between the atmosphere and land-surface. The model consists of one-dimensional multilayer sub-models for the atmosphere, soil, and vegetation. It also includes sophisticated processes for solar and long-wave radiation transmission in vegetation canopy and CO$$_{2}$$ exchanges among the atmosphere, soil, and vegetation. The model can be also used by coupling with a three-dimensional atmosphere model. In this paper, details of SOLVEG2, which includes the function of coupling with atmosphere model MM5, are described.

Silicon isotope separation has been done utilizing the Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation of Si$$_{2}$$F$$_{6}$$ irradiated with two-frequency CO$$_{2}$$ laser lights. The two-frequency excitation method improved the separation efficiency with keeping the high enrichment factors. For example, Si$$_{2}$$F$$_{6}$$ with the $$^{28}$$Si fraction of 99.4 % was obtained at 40.0 % dissociation of Si$$_{2}$$F$$_{6}$$ after the simultaneous irradiation of 100 pulses with 966.23 cm$$^{-1}$$ photons (0.089 J/cm$$^{2}$$) and 954.55 cm$$^{-1}$$ photons (0.92 J/cm$$^{2}$$), while 1000 pulses were needed to obtain 99.0 % of $$^{28}$$Si at 27.2 % dissociation in the case of single frequency irradiation at 954.55 cm$$^{-1}$$ (0.92 J/cm$$^{2}$$). The single-step enrichment factors of $$^{29}$$Si and $$^{30}$$Si increased with increasing Si$$_{2}$$F$$_{6}$$ pressure. The reason for this enhancement has been discussed in terms of the rotational and vibrational relaxations by collisions with ambient gases.

In order to measure the line average electron density on ITER, a CO$$_{2}$$ laser interferometer/polarimeter system is being developed. The design of the interferometer/polarimeter is improved from the previous design, which uses CO$$_{2}$$ and CO laser, on the basis of experience gained with a dual CO$$_{2}$$ system on JT-60U in which good reliability was confirmed for both interferometry and polarimetry operation. The performance of the dual CO$$_{2}$$ laser meets requirements for ITER (accuracy; 1%, time resolution; 1 ms).

Overview of JT-60U diagnostics for reactor-relevant plasma physics

Hatae, Takaki; JT-60 Team

Proceedings of 6th Japan-Australia Workshop on Plasma Diagnostics (CD-ROM), 16 Pages, 2002/00

The diagnostic system of JT-60U is composed of about 50 individual diagnostic devices. Recently, the detailed radial profile measurements of plasma parameters such as electron temperature, electron density, ion temperature, plasma rotation, and plasma current (safety factor q) have been improved. As a result, the understanding of internal structure of plasmas has advanced. In particular, detailed studies of the internal transport barrier could be performed in reversed magnetic shear plasmas. Furthermore, a "current hole" or a nearly zero current density at the plasma center was discovered in JT-60U plasmas by using a motional stark effect (MSE) system. Several diagnostic signal have been linked to actuators such as neutral beam injectors, the gas feed system, and the electron cyclotron heating system establishing the real-time control of electron temperature, neutron yield, radiated power, and electron temperature gradient, and thus improving plasma performance.
